Learn about ASP Introduction in ASP tutorial (2)

ASP stands for Active Server Side Scripting. For this tutorial you need to know HTML. If you are new to ASP and don’t know HTML then check out HTML tutorial on this website. ASP is by Microsoft.

ASP is a kind of a program that runs inside IIS (Internet Information System). IIS is available as a free component with Windows 2000. It is also a part of Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack. This Option Pack is downloadable from Microsoft. Another functional version of IIS is PWS. PWS comes along with Windows 95/98.

Moreover IIS and PWS are compatible with different versions. IIS is compatible with Windows NT or any later versions. PWS is compatible with Windows 95 or later versions.

ASP can be run without Windows Operating system by using Chili ASP. Similarly, ASP can also be run without Windows by using Instant ASP.

ASP is a different from HTML in following ways:

• When an Internet browser requests the HTML file, the server simply returns the HTML file.

• But when an Internet browser requests an ASP file, this request is first passed by IIS to the ASP exchange. Then this ASP engine reads the file and executes the scripts (line by line) in the file. Then this ASP file is returned to the browser as a plain HTML file.

ASP Active Server Side Scripting

ASP stands for Active Server Side Scripting. It is used to create dynamic web pages. It is used to create powerful Web-based Applications. ASP is capable of combining reusable ActiveX server components, scripts and HTML.

ADVANTAGES OF ASP:

Following are the advantages of ASP:

    • ASP is useful in dynamic web scripting. When user sends some request using ASP to web server. The web server processes the user request and generates the HTML code and sends it back to the user. Then the user browser interprets that HTML code and displays the output.

    • ASP is known as a platform independent language. It sends HTML codes in ASCII by default. Therefore almost every browser can process the application made using ASP.

    • ASP code is secured. Only the developer can edit ASP code. The user cannot view the code.
